Martin Lewis slams after gift cards wiped by Currys PC World site crash

Martin Lewis has hit out at Currys PC World after its site crashed on Black Friday, wiping the gift cards of those checking out.

The money saving guru unleashed a strongly worded message to the popular high street electronics and tech group after some revealed they had hundreds wiped from gift cards as they sought to take advantage of Black Friday deals.

The site crashed around 3pm on Friday, November 27, shortly after many spent up to 10 minutes queuing to get on.

However, the crash hit those just about to complete their orders the hardest.

Customers revealed in a plea to Martin during the peak of Black Friday, asking him for help after their gift cards were deducted, but orders weren’t confirmed.

One customer revealed more than £900 was wiped from their gift card as they were checking out on a new laptop.

On his website, moneysavingexpert.com, Martin wrote an open letter to customers and Currys PC World.

It read: “”Currys has been lax and languid. People first started tweeting me about missing gift card money on Friday.

“We alerted the firm immediately.

“Yet barring an unspecific statement, it’s not given people any real direction about how they can get their money, often £100s back – and customers report its help services have been mostly unresponsive.

“That’s a fail.

“Not only must it ensure everyone’s gift cards are refunded, but those affected should be allowed to still purchase items at Black Friday prices so they don’t miss out.

|People have enough crap to deal with this Christmas without Currys adding to it. It needs to confirm arrangements immediately.”

In response to the moneysavingexpert team, a Currys PC World spokesperson said:

“Due to the unprecedented volume of customers shopping online with Currys PC World this Black Friday, our website experienced a temporary outage.

“Unfortunately transactions being made by gift cards were affected.

“We will ensure that every customer affected by this issue has funds put back on to their gift cards in full as soon as possible.

“We apologise for this issue and understand that customers will be disappointed they weren’t able to secure their products.”

Martin later revealed customers have been told they will get new gift cards for the amount of their previous card within “three to five days”, but urges anyone who has been effected to contact their customer service representatives and start the process to getting your gift card reimbursed.
